Gemz strategy tips

Big scores in Gemz are not luck. They come from a handful of habits that line up with how the game counts points. Each tip below is based on the actual scoring rules, explained in How to play.

1. Make every scoring move count

On the level ladder you have 8 scoring moves, and only moves that clear lines use one up. Placing a piece that clears nothing costs you no move at all. The best players use that freedom: they fill the board so that one piece will complete several lines at once, instead of clearing single lines as soon as they appear.

The base of a move is the sum of the Power of the gems it clears, and a clear without any gem has a base of just 1. A gemless clear still uses one of your 8 moves, so try to make sure there are gems in the lines you finish, ideally identical ones.

2. Protect your combo

The combo multiplier climbs fast with consecutive scoring moves: ×2, ×4, ×6, ×8, ×10, and then ×20 on the seventh clear in a row. It also survives exactly one placement that clears nothing; two such placements in a row reset it.

  • After a clear, check that at least one of your pieces can clear again within two placements.
  • Use your one free placement to set up the next clear, not to start a new area of the board.
  • A small clear that keeps the chain going is often worth more than a bigger clear later, because the combo multiplies everything that follows.

3. Build clears around identical gems

Synergy is the part of the formula that rewards skill the most. It takes the largest group of identical gems in a clear and cubes it: two of the same gem give ×8, three give ×27, four give ×64. Different gems don't create synergy with each other.

Pieces often carry the same gem on all of their gem cells, so a single piece can give you two or three identical gems. Place those pieces so that their gems end up in the rows or columns you plan to clear together, and wait for the piece that finishes them all at once.

4. Multi-line clears and Clean Sweeps

Clearing several lines in one move multiplies the score (×2 for two lines, ×3 for four, ×4 for six), and it gathers more gems into a single clear, which feeds the base, the gem multiplier and synergy at the same time. Still, a six-line clear is ×4 while a long combo reaches ×20, so don't sacrifice your chain for one giant move.

Keep an eye on nearly empty boards. Clearing the entire board, a Clean Sweep, multiplies your next two scoring moves by 10 and then by 5, and your next game on the ladder starts with the same boost.

5. Shape your gem mix

  • Watch the Power number. The Power shown above your gem slots estimates what a typical move is worth with your mix. It can go down when you add a weak gem, because every extra gem takes board space from the others and makes identical-gem clears rarer. Test changes and keep the mix that shows the highest Power.
  • Level up the gems you actually play. Copies and coins spent on an equipped gem pay off at once. Low rarities gain the most from each level: a common gem's Multiplier goes from ×2 at level 1 to ×10 at level 10.
  • Mind the milestones. A gem's appearance rate goes up at level 5 and again at level 10, so it shows up more often on the board.
  • Read the level screen before you play. Some levels require a certain mix, and the verdict (Comfortable, Tight or Tough level) tells you whether your mix is strong enough for the target.

6. Use the hold slot

From level 4, you have a hold slot. Park a piece that doesn't fit your plan, such as a big 3×3 when the board is crowded, and bring it back when there's room or when it can complete several lines. A piece still in the slot when a game ends carries over to your next game on the ladder, so a big piece you saved can open your next game with a strong first move. Extra slots cost 2,500, 10,000 and 40,000 coins.

7. Power-ups, and when to use them

Gemz has five power-ups, one per rarity. You take up to five of them into your games through your power-up mix, and each use spends one.

  • Rewinder (common) takes back your last move. Use it right after a placement that blocks the board or breaks your plan.
  • Bomb (rare) clears 13 cells: a 3×3 square plus one more cell in each direction. Hold to preview the blast and release to fire. Best on a crowded area that no piece can fix.
  • Line Eraser (epic) clears a whole row or column; swipe across it. Best on a nearly full line that none of your pieces can finish.
  • Pop Block (legendary) clears a single block. Best on the one cell standing between a big piece and a multi-line clear.
  • Purifier (mythic) clears every block that isn't a gem. Best on a cluttered board with good gems on it: they stay, ready to be lined up.

In the Collection, drag a power-up onto an identical one to merge the two into the next rarity: two Rewinders make a Bomb, two Bombs a Line Eraser, two Line Erasers a Pop Block and two Pop Blocks a Purifier. Merging also frees inventory space. Keep in mind that the weekly tournament gives 3 bonus stars for clearing a level without any power-up, and that the Champion's League limits how many of each you can use per run.

8. Boss levels

Bosses give you only 4 scoring moves. Use the free placements to prepare a board where identical gems sit in lines that can clear together, and try to string your four clears into a combo. If the level screen shows a mix requirement, fix it before you start: the START button stays locked until your mix qualifies.

9. Small daily habits

  • Keep a jewel box unlocking at all times: only one can count down at a time and each timer starts when you tap Start, so an idle slot is lost time.
  • Do the three daily challenges. Each pays coins, finishing all three adds jewels, and they keep your daily streak and season missions going.
  • Spin the free daily turn of the Wheel of Fortune.
  • In the apps, spend your event tickets before they cap at five: a new one arrives every 30 minutes.
